Turquoise lakes in Gokyo Valley.
The Gokyo Lakes are oligotrophic lakes situated between 4,700 and 5,000 meters above sea level in Nepal's Sagarmatha National Park. Gokyo Ri Peak inspired the namesakes of lakes and resorts. These six main lakes, the largest of which is Thonak Lake, make up the world's highest freshwater lake system. Buddhists and Hindus alike place great religious importance on the sacred Gokyo lakes. Twice a year, these lakes serve as a haven for migrating birds making their way across the Himalayas. In addition, Gokyo is well known for being a Ramsar site and the highest altitude ice skating range in the world.
