Trip Overview
The 5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek rewards trekkers with a lifetime trekking experience, getting into the heart of the Annapurna Himalaya. The word Annapurna is derived from two Sanskrit words of “Anna and Purna,” meaning Perfection of Grain; hence the Annapurna, the universal mother goddess that feeds all the sentient beings. It is believed that without her presence on this planet, there would be a lack of food and starvation caused by drought, infertility, and famine. Her main shrine of the Goddess Annapurna Temple is in Asan of Kathmandu.
The Journey starts with a drive from your accommodation in Pokhara and a hike through terraced farm lands, lush green oak, and rhododendron forests. As the journey goes higher, travelers slowly engage themselves in the glory of the Annapurna Sanctuary, enclosed by high mountains such as Annapurna I (8,091m), Machapuchare (6,993m), and Hiunchuli (6,441m).
During this trekking, Wilderness Excursion will try to provide cozy teahouse accommodations that offer a welcoming and warm environment after each day’s hike. Our carefully crafted short itinerary goes through the rugged and easy terrain. If you seek a chance to acclimatize well, allow enough time to rest and adapt. We have 7 days itinerary which provides rest and recovery well.
Moreover, to the spectacular scenery, interacting with locals, mainly the Gurung ethnic groups and Brahman in lower altitude, adds a layer of learning about other parts of the world about the native mountain folk and their friendliness in Nepal.
Difficulty and High Handing Altitude
Regarding the trekking difficulty, this is a moderately challenging trek that requires good physical fitness and some preparation before departure. You will gain fast altitude, reaching the height of 4130 meters in just 3 days. Daily walk will be 5 to 7 hours, and climbing 1000 meters and 2000 meters descent in one day. Following proper acclimatization guidance is important if you are not an expert hiker.
If you think 5 Days hike to ABC is tough and challenging for you, we also have 5 Days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with the same time frame, which is less risky in terms of AMS and is a beginner-friendly hike. The trek is equally beautiful without compromising on the view and scenery.
For beginners, fast and short trekking to 4000 meters may result in getting AMS – generally known as Altitude Mountain Sickness, so you may like to consider a 6 or 7 days Annapurna Base Camp Trekking.
Extend the trekking or other Trek around the Short ABC Trek.
Trekking ABC via Poon Hill makes you fitter and better acclimatized as it involves a multi-day journey with gradually increasing altitudes before reaching the base camp at 4130 meters, allowing your body to adjust to lower oxygen levels before reaching the higher base camp. This approach includes a significant acclimatization point at Poon Hill (around 3,210m), which prepares your body for the even higher elevations to come. It allows you to build endurance by training on similar terrain, which involves many stairs, and provides a test of your physical and mental stamina in the lower elevations.
At Wilderness Excursion, we highly advise hiring a trekking porter for just an extra cost of USD 20 per day to lighten your load and help you make the trek easier. Or do you still Annapurna Base Camp Trek, but you may like to consider a 6 to 7 days itinerary that allows you enough time getting acclimatized, resting, and recovering with a gradual walk. For those who seek longer and adventurous trekking in Annapurna can opt Classic Annapurna Circuit and even combine it with Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass.
5 Days ABC Trek Trail Condition and Terrain
The trail goes through stone steps, forest paths, river valleys, and rocky sections near base camp. The Path isn’t just uphill; there are significant descents and climbs (e.g., descending into valleys then climbing back out.

Accommodation and Amenities in this trek
The teahouses are basic but equipped with proper bedding, sharing a toilet and bathroom outside. A hot bucket shower can be ordered for a fee; running a hot shower is rare and doesn’t function in freezing months. Safe drinking water is sold along the route in a teahouse.
The route lacks private rooms for solo travelers and couples in peak trekking season. Typically, rooms are 3 to 4 bed rooms or even more and lodge owner always try to accommodate more people because of limited accommodation in higher altitude. October and early November are crowded during the Dashain and Tihar festivals as many Nepalese young people now like going hiking during the long vacation.
Bring your sleeping bag, though lodges also provide an adequate blanket or quilt. There no heating in rooms but lodges have central heating fueled by firewood for evening dinner and chat with follow trekkers.
Food and Drinks:
Regarding the food and drinks, the trail is dotted with teahouses (small lodges) that provide both lodging and meals. Menus are surprisingly extensive for food and drinks, but simplicity and carbs are key as you gain altitude on the base camp route.
As the list of meals is wide, Trek is absolutely vegetarian and vegan-friendly, but it requires some planning and clear communication. The classic Nepali staple, Daal Bhat, is your best friend, but you need to specify your restrictions.
The Golden Rule: Dal Bhat Power! is a popular Nepali slogan that refers to the country's staple meal of lentils (dal), rice (bhat), and vegetables, which is said to provide sustained energy.
The perfect months or the season of the year to hike to Annapurna Base Camp
The best time to trek is post monsoon months (Sept, Oct and November) in Autumn. And March to May (Spring Season) is the best season for the Annapurna Trek. Spring season that begins from March to last to May. Chances of rare light storm rain and hazy days makes spring less popular than autumn but again spring is best time to escape the over crowed of hikers.
Moreover, trekking in winter (December, January, and February) offers beautiful views, though the temperature drops, and it can be cold. It is very doable with adequate warm clothing.
Additionally, trekking in the monsoon (June, July, and August) can be wet; the view is affected by dense clouds and rain. But benefit of trekking in month of June to August is best time to escape crowd and peaceful trail with fewer hiker. Rain-soaked beauty, wildflowers, and loud-wreathed views of the peak are awesome. If you are planning a July or August trek, check our monsoon trekking in Nepal.
How to I stay connected with family and friends?
All the lodges have WiFi internet and you will have paying (cost NPR 100 to 200) connectivity wherever you stay for the night, but it will be slow, unreliable. The higher you go, the more unreliable it gets but good enough to drop a WhatsApp message. You can opt for Nepali SIM Card – a local mobile network that costs USD 2 or NPR 200 and can subscribe for 4G mobile internet data is much faster.
Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has a Free Wi-Fi service available at the International Terminal Building from the departure area to the arrival.
