We take an exhilarating early morning flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur—a short but scenic 45-minute journey. Bhadrapur, nestled in the lush Mechi Zone of southeastern Nepal, serves as our gateway to Taplejung. From there, we embark on a picturesque drive through Nepal’s stunning landscapes, which takes approximately 7-8 hours, depending on road conditions.
Our day begins with a drive to Sekathum that takes approximately 6 hours following the route from Taplejung to Sekathum, some 40 km away. We drive through narrow and winding roads on our drive. We will check our permits at the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area check post and pass through various settlements. By traveling along the Tamor Nadi and passing through some bridges, we will eventually reach Sekathum.
Today, we begin our trek to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Our journey starts in Sekathum, winding through lush Rhododendron forests and across swaying suspension bridges. The trail takes us up and down scenic hillsides, past charming little settlements, before arriving in Amjilosa after five to six hours of hiking. We’ll spend the night here, resting and soaking in the mountain atmosphere before continuing our adventure
We’ll set out from Sekathum, following the banks of the Ghunsa Khola as we make our way toward Amjilosa. The trail winds through lush forests, where—if we’re lucky—we might catch a glimpse of the elusive red panda. As we amble along the path, the snow-capped mountains rise in the distance, their peaks glistening against the sky. After a leisurely four to five hours of hiking (depending on our pace), we’ll arrive at the charming village of Gyabla (Kyapra), where we’ll spend the night.
After breakfast, we’ll continue our journey along the trail to Ghunsa. The path winds through lush forests, where we may encounter fellow trekkers—some heading toward Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp) and others returning from their ascent. Along the way, we’ll likely spot Himalayan yaks, steadily carrying loads up and down the rugged terrain. After approximately five hours of trekking, we’ll arrive at Ghunsa, our stop for the day.
While most trekkers stop in Ghunsa to acclimatize—hiking to Ghunsa Viewpoint or Dudh Kunda—we will continue our journey to Khambachen after breakfast. Strolling through open pine forests, we’ll pass charming villages like Rambuk Kharka and Lyakep, all while taking in breathtaking views of towering peaks such as Jannu (7,711m | 25,298ft), Temachungi (6,305m | 20,685ft), and Pholesobi Thongje (6,652m | 21,824ft). The trail leads us onward, culminating in our arrival at Khambachen.
Today, we will spend the day acclimatizing in Khambachen, a charming village nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. The surrounding landscape offers breathtaking views of the Jannu, Nagphu, and Sarphu ranges, as well as the striking Nupchu Peak and other majestic summits.
To make the most of our acclimatization day, you can:
- Explore the traditional houses and serene trails of Khambachen village.
- Hike to the stunning Nupchu Pokhari (4,952 m / 16,246 ft), a pristine high-altitude lake.
- Trek up to the Jannu Viewpoint for an unforgettable panorama of the towering peaks.
We’ll spend the night at a cozy teahouse in Khambachen, resting and preparing for the adventures ahead.
Following the trail along the bank of Ghunsa Khola, we gradually approach the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Upon reaching Ramdang (4,375m / 14,353ft), we are rewarded with breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga, Ramtang, Gimmigela, and other towering peaks. The journey continues as we trek alongside the Kanchanjunga Glacier, crossing the striking expanse of Dry Lake before finally arriving at Lhona
We’ll begin our day trip from the base camp of the world’s third-highest mountain, Mt. Kanchenjunga, heading toward Pang Pema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp). Along the way, we’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the towering Himalayan peaks.
Upon arrival, we’ll spend time soaking in the majestic scenery, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags and the awe-inspiring presence of the Himalayas. After absorbing the serenity of this high-altitude sanctuary, we’ll make our way back to Lhonak
Retracing our steps from the breathtaking Kanchenjunga Base Camp, we will begin our descent to Ghunsa. Along the way, we’ll pass through enchanting rhododendron forests and soak in the majestic mountain vistas before arriving in Ghunsa.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast in Ghunsa, you’ll bid farewell to the village and begin your descent toward Amjilosa. The trail takes you through the scenic villages of Phale and Gyabla, with the entire journey lasting 8–9 hours on foot. Since the route is entirely downhill, be mindful of your knees—the steady descent can be strenuous on the joints. Your day concludes with an overnight stay at Amjilosa Lodge, where you can rest and recharge.
You will eventually encounter a magnificent waterfall after some time spent traveling. You will pass past the little settlement of Solima as you proceed on the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek before crossing a suspension bridge across Ghunsa Khola. There is a second suspension bridge across Ghunsa Khola that you must cross in order to go to Sukathum. Your trekking path passes through a variety of villages before making its way down the Thunsa Khola and then to Tamor Nadi, where you will spend the night.
Leaving the mountains behind but carrying their memories with us, we’ll savor the cool breeze one last time before boarding our jeep. Our journey now takes us to Kanyam, Ilam—a lush expanse of rolling tea gardens (Nepal's tea state). This charming destination is a favorite among domestic tourists, who flock here to soak in its serene beauty and refreshing climate.
After a nice breakfast, we will drive to Bhadrapur from Ilam, and we will catch the scenic flight back to Kathmandu that takes some 40 to 45 minutes and have our final glimpses of the majestic snow-covered mountains. Wilderness Excursion will take you back to your hotel. Your 15 days Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trekking Itinerary ends. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Are you ready to take on the challenge?
Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization on the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek
The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek reaches a maximum altitude of 5,140 meters (16,800 ft), with six days spent above 2,500 meters. At these elevations, the thinning oxygen levels put significant strain on the body, increasing the risk of altitude sickness. Common symptoms include loss of appetite and decreased thirst—both natural reactions to high altitude.
Despite these challenges, staying hydrated and eating nutritious meals is crucial to minimizing risks. Our team will monitor your health, ensuring you drink enough water and maintain energy levels.
How Serious Can Altitude Sickness Be?
While most cases are mild, ignoring symptoms can lead to severe complications, sometimes requiring emergency air evacuation—cutting the trek short. Proper rest and acclimatization are essential, which is why our itinerary includes dedicated acclimatization days to help your body adjust safely. It is always suggested to walk your own gentle and steady.
By following our guidance and listening to your body, you can significantly reduce risks and enjoy a successful trek to Kanchenjunga’s breathtaking heights.
Kanchenjunga Trekking permit and Rules and Regulations to follow!
Kanchenjunga Region falls in restricted areas in Nepal and requires obtaining a special entry permit and an ordinary KCA (Kanchenjunga Conservation Area ), which costs:
- Restricted Area Entry Permit cost: USD 20 per person, per week
- Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Entry Permit (KCAP) cost: Nrs 2000 per person
Like other restricted area routes, the Kanchenjunga trek also needs to be arranged through a registered trekking agency. There should be a minimum of two parties (foreigners). Foreign trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide as per state law.
Best Time or Best Months of the year to do the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking
The best months for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek are during spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November)—the peak trekking seasons in the Himalayas. These periods offer stable weather, clear skies, and the best conditions for trekking.
Spring (March-May) brings vibrant rhododendron blooms, lush greenery, and moderate daytime temperatures, though mornings and evenings remain chilly. Autumn (October-November) boasts crisp air, unobstructed mountain views, and comfortable trekking temperatures.
Winter (December-February) brings extreme cold and snow, while the monsoon (June-September) makes trails slippery and visibility poor. For the safest and most enjoyable experience, spring and autumn are the optimal choices—offering breathtaking landscapes, pleasant weather, and unforgettable trekking adventures.
While we recommend traditional peak seasons (April-May & September-October) for trekking in the Himalayas, climate change has led to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. Unusual conditions—such as unseasonal rainfall, early snowfall, or temperature fluctuations—can occur at any time.
We advise trekkers to maintain an open mind and remain flexible with their plans. Being prepared for sudden changes will ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience in these majestic mountains.
Food, Accommodation, and Drinking Water on the Kanchenjunga Trek
The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp has transitioned into a lodge-to-lodge trek, yet it remains one of the most remote and least developed trekking routes in the Himalayas. Unlike the more popular Everest Base Trek or Annapurna treks, facilities here are minimal, making this adventure suitable only for trekkers with high endurance and a readiness for remote survival.
Accommodation: Basic Lodges, but Good Functional
Along the trail, a limited number of teahouses offer very basic services. Rooms typically include two separate beds with pillows and blankets—enough for a decent night’s rest. Washrooms are shared, and hot showers are rare unless you’re willing to pay extra. Given the rugged nature of the trek, managing expectations is key.
Food: Simple but Nourishing
Food options are limited but hearty. Traditional Nepali meals like dal bhat, Noodles, and Chapati with veg curry provide the necessary energy for long trekking days. While meat dishes are available, it’s wise to ask how fresh they are before ordering. Snacks are scarce along the trail, so bringing your own favorites is highly recommended.
Other menu items may include soups, porridge, pasta, oats, eggs, and toast—though variety diminishes as you ascend. Since safe drinking water is essential, we recommend carrying a reusable bottle and water purification tablets.
Other treks around Kanchenjunga Base Camp
There are three variants of trek in the Kanchenjunga region, offering trekking variants that cater to different levels of adventure, difficulty, and the time you can spend. Here are some notable trekking variants in the Kangchenjunga region:
Kangchenjunga North Base Camp
Kangchenjunga Circuit Trek (covering both North & South base camps)
Kangchenjunga Base Camp combined with the Lumba Sumba Pass Trek
Travel Insurance Requirement for Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek
The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek is a remote and high-altitude adventure, traversing one of the most untouched regions of the Himalayas. Due to the challenging nature of this trek, Wilderness Excursion strongly recommends—and in some cases requires—comprehensive travel insurance for your safety.
Key Insurance Requirements:
- Emergency Air Evacuation covering altitudes up to 6,000 meters
- Medical Expense Coverage (highly recommended)
The Kanchenjunga region is a breathtaking yet demanding environment. While trekking to the North Base Camp is an extraordinary experience, it does come with inherent risks. Proper insurance ensures that, in the unlikely event of an emergency, you have access to critical support.
At Wilderness Excursion, our priority is delivering unforgettable adventures safely. For specialized treks like this, securing the right insurance isn’t just a suggestion—it’s an essential part of responsible travel preparation.
Safety and Challenges
- Remote Location: Limited access to rescue and medical facilities in case of emergencies.
- Avalanche Risk: High camps and certain routes are prone to avalanches—proper assessment and caution are essential.
- Local Guidance: Hiring an experienced local guide or porter is strongly recommended for navigation and safety.
