Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Overview

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is famous for its splendor and miraculous beauty. Annapurna Sanctuary, enclosed by a massive ring of Himalayan giants, is an incredible experience that attracts many trekkers from all corners of the world. We hike with the help of our local, expert Nepalese guide from Wilderness Excursion. Our years of experience and commitment to excellence make this trip excellent.

Our carefully crafted 8-day Annapurna Sanctuary Trek itinerary takes you through remote villages, terraced farmlands, and forests of bamboo and rhododendron trees. Along the way, we are treated to impressive mountain views and glimpses of local villagers. Our destination is the heart of the mountainous amphitheater that holds Annapurna Base Camp. Here, we enjoy 360° views of rising snowy peaks and a sense of immense exhilaration and solitude. Wake up to catch the sunrise over the Annapurna South; an incredible, mind-blowing view that is not to be missed. Completing this trek is a lifetime memorable journey that few will ever experience. If you lack the time for the 8 Days trek, check our 7 Days Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

Trekking through traditional paths used for hundreds of years by Tibetan traders, this one-week-long trek to Annapurna Sanctuary can only be explained as mind-blowing. The Annapurna Sanctuary is well-regarded for its unique beauty and spiritual significance. Our journey starts from Kande, walking through the Australian Camp, which is a very popular short hiking destination from Pokharab, and then our route of the Annapurna Sanctuary trail joins the Phedi-Dhampus route to Annapurna Base Camp.

When to trek? What is the best time to trek?

The best time to trek to Annapurna Sanctuary is from mid-September to November and March to May. The weather is sunny and warm, with outstanding views. Daytime temperatures at most altitudes are generally comfortable for walking, the sky is clear much of the time, and rain and snow are occasional occurrences. If you wish to escape from crowds and enjoy some lonely time with nature, then Wilderness Excursion suggests you trek there in December, January, and March. However, the temperature during winter could be tough for most guests.

Trekking in the summer or monsoon seasons (June to Aug) will be affected by rain, but the summer trek could be beneficial as it provides immense tranquility due to fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and a chance to experience rich, active biodiversity, while often offering more budget-friendly, intimate cultural interactions with locals. Check our Nepal Monsoon Treks if you are considering trekking in Annapurna in July or August.

How hard is this trek/level of difficulty?

Regarding the difficulty of this trek, this is medium hard for first-time trekkers in the Nepalese Himalaya. But if you have past hiking experience in the Alps or hiked in Bhutan / Machu Picchu, then this trek is moderately easy compared to other treks such as Manaslu Circuit, Kanchenjunga, Dolpo, and even the Everest Base Camp Trek, etc.

How is the accommodation on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route?

The lodges in the Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking Route are pretty good, clean, and tidy; beyond Bamboo, there are mostly double, triple, or four-bed rooms only; single-bed rooms are rare when we go higher. But single rooms are readily available in lower elevations. You may have to share the room with other trekkers if you are trekking solo, as the lodges get full of visitors in peak seasons. Hot showers are readily available in most places as well.

Meals in Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

During our Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, you could enjoy a wide range of food varieties, from Western food to authentic Nepali meals, Chinese, and Tibetan, etc. There are choices everywhere; pasta, pizza, macaroni, cheese, eggs, curry rice, chicken, potato, item, spring roll, chapati, muesli, porridge, omelet, and pancakes for breakfast are a few to name. Meat is not allowed to be carried out to Annapurna Base Camp as the locals believe the Himalayas are sacred and holy, though you could enjoy a chicken roast in low elevations. At any guesthouse, you could expect the choices to fall into one of these menu categories: Please do not expect the meal to be of world-class standard, but they always try to do their best to serve you in the highly remote area.

How to get to the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek?

Most people take tourist buses to Pokhara; it is 200 km long, and it takes 7 to 8 hours depending on traffic on the way. There are tourist coaches available. Cost ranges (USD 10 to 15 per person with breakfast) run every morning from/to Kathmandu. Wilderness Excursion arranges a private car, Jeep, or private van on request. Taking domestic flights to/from Pokhara saves time, and most airlines fly to Pokhara from Kathmandu every day (USD105). Take the right side seat for a striking view of a wide range of the Himalayas from the plane on the board to Pokhara.

Annapurna Sanctuary cost of the tour 2026

The trip cost we offered here is USD 549, which is the standard trek price on a double occupancy basis. The single supplement cost will be an extra USD 155.00 to use the same service. The cost will be according to budget, standard, and deluxe tour plans, and group sizes. Taking flights to and from Pokhara saves your time and comfort rather than taking an exhausting, long bus ride; however, riding a bus reduces the trip price. Accommodation in Kathmandu is excluded. We can arrange a hotel booking in Pokhara if you ask us.

How long is the Annapurna Sanctuary trek?

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek will be 8 to 10 days from and to Pokhara, and the daily walk will be 10 to 22 km a day. In addition, the two transport days from/to Kathmandu depend on the time you have and the level of your physical fitness. Many people trek to Annapurna Sanctuary via Ghorepani Poon Hill, which is relaxing and allows you to get adapted, and the itinerary will be 9 to 10 days (see our Annapurna Sanctuary Trek via Poon Hill plan).

Our carefully designed 8 Days Annapurna Sanctuary Trek itinerary is for moderate trekkers. Wilderness Excursion´s shortest Annapurna Sanctuary trek itinerary will be 7 to 8 days long, including domestic flights to Pokhara from Kathmandu, and will start the trek on the same day. We also offer tailor-made trips to Annapurna Sanctuary; please kindly send us your details for a modified trip plan.

Our Annapurna Sanctuary Trek guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Pokhara, then take drive of an hour to Phedi, which provides the hiking starting point. We will trek to Tolka (1810m) via the charming hamlets of DhampusPothana tec.. The trail is steep until Dhampus and then a pleasant and easy walk up to Deurali through lush green red-sandalwood and rhododendron forest, then the trail descends steeply down to Bherikharka, and a 30 to 40 minute walk takes us to Tolka. Stay there overnight in the lodge.

We walk a pretty flat trail until Landruk, then descend down and trek along the river through Himalpani and cross a suspension bridge over Modikhola near New Bridge. Then we walk until reaching Jhinu, located on the ridge, and continue another hour steeply up hiking to Chhomrong for our Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking. Chhomrong is a beautiful Gurung Village, which is the last human settlement on the way to the sanctuary. Stay overnight at the cozy trekking lodge.

After breakfast, we resume our journey to Annapurna Sanctuary for the day. The trail descends 310 meters through thousands of stone staircase crosses, then crosses Chhumrung Khola on a bridge and climbs up to Sinuwa at a height of 2340 meters. It is an easy walk through rhododendron festooned with orchids and ferns, then steep down with a stone staircase to Bamboo. After having lunch there, we will walk through the cool forest for about an hour to Dovan at an elevation of 2630 meters. Stay overnight in a trekking lodge.

Today, on the route to Annapurna Sanctuary, we have a silent jungle walk to the Himalaya from Dovan. It is believed that mountains are sacred and holy. It is already believed that Annapurna means "full of food" (feminine form), but is normally translated as Goddess of the Harvests. In Hinduism, Annapurna is. the universal and timeless kitchen-goddess, the mother who feeds. Without her, there is starvation and a universal fear. Her most popular shrine is located in Kashi, on the banks of the river Ganga." Her association with the giving of food (wealth) led her, in time, to be transformed into Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, so from the religious view, it is important to respect Mother Nature and create peaceful and calm surroundings. Stay overnight at the lodge.

Above Deurali, the valley widens and becomes less steep. After walking some stone stairs, we will reach the place where some people were killed by an avalanche a decade ago. We should not stop in this dangerous place for a long time. This place is warned of avalanches, so continue trekking ahead with caution until you get to a safe place. As you walk further, the more beautiful White Mountains become more visible and closer. The trail turns to the left in the valley after Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and it is a pleasant walk up ABC, though the air is thin. You can see a 360˙degree Mountain View of the real Annapurna Sanctuary. There are tremendous views of giant Annapurna I 8091m, Annapurna South 7219m, Machhapuchhre (Mt. Fishtail) 6997m, and several other wonderful peaks. Stay overnight at the lodge.

We will witness a stunning dawn at Sanctuary, enjoy the magnificent view of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Singu Chuli, Khangsar Kang, and Hiunchuli, all of which stand with an imposing presence. The view is breathtaking. After enjoying the scenery, your Annapurna Sanctuary Trek route will retrace to Bamboo. On the way back, you’ll say farewell to the captivating views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Our return journey will take you through Deurali, Himalaya, Bamboo, Dovan, and Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Walking through these small, charming towns feels fantastic. The hike down from Base Camp to Bamboo takes several hours.

Leaving Bamboo behind, we set out for Ghandruk today. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking route to Ghandruk - we retrace until reaching Chhomrong. After the Chhomrong trail goes through a pretty flat area at first, it descends to Kimrong Khola and hikes up to Komrong Danda. We can stop there for lunch break, then continue our trek to Ghandruk, a beautiful Gurung village also known as a “Gurung Heritage”. There, we can visit the Gurung museum and a monastery. And you’ll have the chance to interact with the locals. If you wish, you can learn more about their culture, lifestyle, customs, and religions. Stay there in trekking overnight at Ghandruk.

Our trek to Annapurna Sanctuary will end on this day. After a delightful leisure breakfast in Ghandruk, we take a short trek to lower Ghandruk (Kyumi), where we may pick up a private vehicle and travel to Pokhara. Pokhara can be reached in around 3 hours, arriving around 2 PM. After arriving in Pokhara, you may spend the evening shopping, visiting the area, or perhaps taking a boat out on Phewa Lake. Rest and relax in the lake city of Pokhara. Our Annapurna Sanctuary Trek now concludes. Farewell, friend, until the next adventure in Nepal!
