Untouched Kanchenjunga and Lumba Sumba unveil Nepal's wild west. This trek, less traveled, immerses you in remote villages, verdant forests, and pure wilderness adventures.

Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek: A Journey into Untamed Wilderness

The Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek, a challenging and remote adventure, offers a profound immersion into the easternmost reaches of Nepal, where the grandeur of the Himalayas remains largely untouched by mass tourism. This trek, a demanding circuit that traverses high passes and pristine valleys, provides a rare glimpse into the cultural tapestry of isolated communities and the raw, untamed beauty of the Kanchenjunga region.

Kanchenjunga and Lumba Sumba Trek is a hardly walked trail proposed for wilderness and less traveled route seekers in the western part of Nepal that offers backcountry trek experiences. Though the journey starts from Kathmandu, the walking adventure starts from Phoongling, which is some 7-8 hour jeep ride from Bhadrapur. The hike passes through diverse cultural groups, terraced farmlands, and villages along the Lumba Sumba Pass trek with an amazing side trek to Kanchenjunga north Base Camp ( 4978 meters).

Kanchenjunga and Lumba Sumba pass trek brings trekkers from Kanchenjunga North base camp to Lumba Sumba, then to Makalu region, where they can be continued. There are occasional sightings of the Snow Leopard and the Red Panda along the Lumba Samba Pass trail. The Lumba Sumba Pass, at a height of 5,177 meters above sea level, is the highest point of the Lumba Sumba Pass trek. The three-week trek ends at Num, from where we drive to Khandbari and then to the Tumlingtar Airport, where the flight to Kathmandu awaits us.

A Tapestry of Cultures and Landscapes:

The diversity of the route is what makes it so appealing. It's more than just a physical test; it's a voyage through a variety of environments, including glaciated regions, alpine meadows, and subtropical rainforest. As you ascend, you'll see the striking change in vegetation from colorful rhododendron forests to windswept, arid passes. A rare chance to engage with other ethnic groups, such as the Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and Tibetan communities, each with their own customs and ways of life, is also provided by the trek.

Key Highlights of the Trek:

  • Lumba Sumba Pass (5159 m): This high pass, the trek's namesake, is a challenging but rewarding crossing. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
  • Remote Valleys and Villages: The trek traverses remote valleys, such as the Olangchung Gola and Yangma valleys, where traditional lifestyles remain largely unchanged. You'll encounter charming villages with stone houses, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and friendly locals who welcome trekkers with warm hospitality.

Essential Preparations and Considerations:

  • Physical Fitness: The Kanchenunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is a 3-week-long, demanding hike requiring good physical fitness. Begin training well in advance, focusing on cardiovascular endurance and strength.
  • Trekking Experience: Prior trekking experience at high altitudes is essential.
  • Permits: You will need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP) for this trek that can be obtained through a registered trekking agency. Wilderness Excursion arranges all necessary entrance permits.
  • Guide and Porters: Due to the trek's remoteness and complexity, it's essential to hire a reputable trekking agency with experienced guides and porters. Moreover, trekking in all the restricted areas of Nepal requires trekking with a registered guide hired through a certified trekking agency.
  • Gear: Pack appropriate trekking gear, including warm clothing, waterproof layers, sturdy boots, a sleeping bag, and a first-aid kit. We will provide you with a comprehensive packing list while booking this trek.
  • Acclimatization: Allow sufficient time for acclimatization to prevent any altitude-caused sickness. Our crafted itinerary contains a rest day for acclimatization, and it is always wise to allow some buffer days in case you may need it.
  • Travel Insurance: Wilderness Excursion strongly advises getting insured, and your travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation in case of any crisis.
  • Respect for Local Culture: Be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, ask permission before taking photos, and avoid littering.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Practice Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment.
  • Flexibility: Be prepared for changes in the itinerary due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Food and Lodging: Expect basic teahouse accommodation and simple meals. In remote areas, camping is necessary for 3 to 4 nights on Lumba Sumba Part.
  • Communication: There are mobile receptions in most of the areas; there is even WiFi internet in Kanchenjunga; however, communication can be limited in remote areas. Consider using local SIM cards where available.
  • Budget and Cost: The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is a relatively expensive trek due to its remoteness and the need for permits and guides. Our inclusive package cost is US$ 2399 per adult, which includes all the travel and logistics.

Itinerary
Expand all

Take the morning flight to Bhadrapur, then we drive in a private vehicle to the town of Taplejung or Ilam, where we spend the night in a hotel. This region is well known for its tea plantations.

It’s a long day of driving but the road from Ilam to Taplejung (4 to 5 hrs) is black-topped (tarmac) and although it is a windy mountain road, the going is smooth. From Taplejung to Sekathum there is a dirt road subject to seasonal weather conditions. This is approximately a 5-hour drive from Taplejung. At Tapethok there is the first of many checkpoints where they will check to ensure you have the correct trekking permits. Make sure you do! Then resume the drive to Sekathum, At Sekathum, which is even smaller than Tapethok, you are at 1,576 m, only 200 m higher than Tapethok.

This is our standard itinerary. It can be customized or slightly changed if required considering your pace and trekking habit that cause a change of day-to-day plan.
