Enjoy the comfortable traditional route of the Apple Pie Trail of Annapurna, and also explore the hidden Shangri-La of Nar Phu Valley to the north to upgrade from the main traditional route to a rugged, rough, and less-visited restricted area in Annapurna.

Trip Overview

Nar Phu Valley Trek with Annapurna Circuit is a fantastic trip to the wild and lost valley of Nar Phu, offering an off-the-beaten-track wilderness experience in the Annapurna region. Nar and Phu villages are situated off the main trekking trail en route to Manang, surrounded by Pisang Peak to the south, Kangla Pass (5,320m height) to the west, Kangru Himal to the east, and Damodar Himal to the north. The villages are situated at an altitude of 4110 meters. Being nestled inside the valley, it is less windy, but the land is dry and rugged. Perhaps the late Prof. David Snellgrove, a renowned Tibetologist, is the first Westerner to have visited these villages in his Himalayan Pilgrimage. Their spoken dialect is different from Manang and Tibetan. Most of the houses are two-story with the entrance from the top. There are three Buddhist monasteries. Phu is located at the upper end of the valley. As in the high mountain area, the people of the Nar Phu descend to a warm region from December to February. The people of Nar have a closer relationship with Manang. Unlike people from Manang, they do not trade widely but rather concentrate on nearby areas in the south. The Gurungs of Lamjung used the lamas of Nar Phu as they believed they were experts; therefore, they had great influence.

Nar and Phu villages were lost around 1960 at the advent of Khampas (Tibetan warriors) until 1975. Khampas made their actual presence in 1964 and lasted until they were driven out of Nepal entirely. They waged insurgency operations in Tibet after the Dalai Lama escaped to India. The valley was opened to foreigners with a special permit in 2003. Since then, the lost village has been opened to the outside world. The Khampas were more powerful than the locals, so they dominated the villages. The valley was a secure place for them. Though it is near Lamjung in the south, for central administration, it is beyond their outlook post. In many aspects, Manang dominated every aspect of Nar Phu, though at a later stage, Lamjung exerted its influence as the people of Nar Phu detested the superiority exhibited by Manang. That is also one reason for the isolation that isolated them from the rest and deprived them of the development benefits happening around them. They have not been able to get out of the social clutch and the valley that surrounds them.

Occasional visitors to Nar and Phu villages were climbers. They go to climb Himlung Himal (7126m) to the east, on the border with Tibet, of Phu and Kanguru (6981m) east of Nar. The French expedition to Kanguru in 2005 met a big climbing disaster due to an avalanche that happened near Meta. In 2009, another climbing disaster happened at Himlung due to an unexpected avalanche. Technically, both peaks are more challenging than most trekking peaks. Nar Phu Valley is also approached from the north-northwest from Mustang through the high pass at Teri La Pass (5595m), Trek, and Saribung La. These are not regular trekking routes but are used by the people of Nar and Phu and some wilderness trekking lovers. However, climbers liked to cross this pass after climbing Saribung Peak (6327m).

Kind of Accommodation and Cost in Nar Phu Valley and Thorong La Pass Trekking

Now, Nar Phu Valley is possible as a teahouse trek and a homestay trekking, and does not need trekkers to camp. One gets to indulge in the local culture, traditional houses, and the lives of the warm people who make the treks more enjoyable. Accommodation is not an issue in Nar Phu Valley. The trails are usually unfilled or less crowded, and new and improved tea houses are opening up all the time. No earthquake damage at all. The cost of a room on a twin-sharing basis usually ranges from NPR 500 – 800 (USD 5 – 10). The price goes higher as you walk higher. Please do not expect luxury, but something comfortable enough for remote and cultural discovery.

Guide and Porter Cost for Annapurna Circuit and Nar Phu Valley Trekking

Whereas many of the famous treks in Nepal do not have strict requirements for hiring licensed guides, all the controlled and restricted trekking areas in Nepal require that foreign trekkers be accompanied by a registered guide as per state law. The cost of a guide is USD 30 – 40 a day, depending on the quality, level of education, the experience of the guide, and the season. Porter's hire costs USD 20 a day. The cost covers wages, accommodation, and food for the guide and porter. Some companies also offer fresh guides, and they can act as Guide cum Porter (PcG) who carries some 10-13kg for you and simply guides you. Hiring a guide cum porter will cost USD 25 per day.

We recommend you take an experienced licensed guide as Nar Phu is an adventurous and high-altitude area; if something goes wrong, you need a good guide with all the technical knowledge for safety who can handle the crisis. The training and experience of a licensed professional guide can make your trek more fun.

Suggested Side Trip and Other Routes around Nar Phu Valley and Throng La Pass Trek

Himlung Base Camp: The hike to Himlung Himal Base Camp from Phu Gaon is a 4 to 5-hour, 12-kilometer trek. It features a gradual, scenic ascent through alpine meadows and rocky terrain, bringing you from 4,050 meters (Phu) to 4,900 meters (Base Camp). Hikers are rewarded with stunning views of Himlung Himal and the surrounding Pangir Glacier.

Tilicho Lake: Tilicho Lake is a glacial lake located in the north of the Manang Valley at an altitude of 4950 m. It is in 2 days hiking distance, approximately 24 KM (15 miles). Tilicho Lake provides surreal beauty, remote wilderness, and a spiritual significance experience, and provides a spectacular mountain view. Check our Nar Phu Valley Trek with Tilicho Lake.

Ice Lake: Ice Lake, locally called Kicho Tal, is a stunning, high-altitude glacial lake at 4,620 meters (15157 ft) in the Manang Valley, Nepal. Famous as a challenging day hike on the Annapurna Circuit, it rewards trekkers with a steep, sacred alpine escape and panoramic views of the Annapurna and Gangapurna ranges. Most trekkers usually spend an extra day in Manang to help them get acclimatized to the altitude. It is recommended to take this worthwhile day excursion if you do not rest and recover your body.

Mesokanto La Pass: Mesokanto La Pass (5,340m) connects Tilicho Lake to the Khangsar–Jomsom trail. As a challenging and off-the-beaten-path route, it offers a rugged alternative to the more frequented Thorong La Pass that perfect way to escape the crowd in Annapurna Circuit. Linking the scenic Manang Valley with the Mustang district, the pass rewards trekkers with breathtaking views of Tilicho Lake—one of the highest lakes in the world. Check our Nar Phu Valley Tilicho Lake, Mesokanto La Pass Trek

Your assigned guide by Wilderness Excursion for Annapurna Circuit Trek via Na Phu Valley will arrive at your hotel at 6:00 am and will take you to the bus station using a private vehicle. Then take a bus ride to Besisahar (175 km). The trip will last around 5 hours, driving along the Trishuli River and Marsyandi. While traveling, you will see a splendid view of snowy peaks, lush hills, rivers, and local villages. Then again, drive by jeep or local bus for 3 to 4 hours from Besisahar to Jagat via Nagdi, Bulbuhle, and Sange. Overnight stay in a trekking lodge at Jagat.

After breakfast, we set off on our Annapurna Circuit Trek via Nar Phu Valley leisurely. From Jagat, the trail descends toward the river, then winds through a lush forest. A gradual ascent brings us to a sharp-edged cliff overlooking the riverbank. Along the way, Chyamje appears against the stunning backdrop of the towering Annapurna ranges. After crossing a suspension bridge, we face a steep, slippery, and physically demanding climb to Sattale. Following a series of rocky paths, we descend to a grassy riverbank that leads to Tal. Beyond Tal, the trail becomes rugged and winding, eventually approaching the forested village of Karte. We then meander past waterfalls and cliffs before crossing another suspension bridge to reach Dharapani. Overnight at a lodge in Dharapani.

We proceed to Bagarchhap, a journey of about an hour through pine and fir forests. In this village, we can visit the whitewashed monastery. From there, we continue trekking to Danaque, which takes roughly another hour. The trail then climbs steeply up to Timang, where we are rewarded with excellent views of Mt. Manaslu and Peak 29. The Annapurna Circuit via Nar Phu valley path continues through pine forests once more, leading to Latamarang in about an hour and a half. We stop here for lunch, then resume our walk through the forest, where we catch a brief glimpse of Annapurna II. Finally, we arrive in Koto village, where we spend the night at a local lodge.

Today, we explore a new path on the Annapurna Circuit to Nar Phu Valley. A long and fairly difficult day awaits us today. We pass through the checkpoint, traverse the bridge leading into the Nar Phu valley, and stroll through the beautiful forests situated above the Phu Khola River. The trail passes through beautiful forest, past several small refuges (caves) and pilgrim shelters ("dharmasalas"). Approaching a narrow canyon, the trail passes under a wide waterfall just before the Dharmasala, from where the forest thins out. We spent the night in a teahouse in Meta.

After breakfast, we ascend through a picturesque small river valley—one of the most beautiful walks in the Himalayas—eventually reaching the highland meadows that serve as Nar’s winter settlement. The landscape evokes the Sierra Nevada: white rock, scrub, juniper, scattered evergreens, delicate brick-red and orange bushes, crumbling slate, white sandy paths, and gnarled trees. The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Nar Phu Valley trail then passes through the semi-settled hamlets of Meta, Junam, and Chhekpa.

Tibetan Khampas sometimes seek refuge in these settlements. To the upper right, a vast glacier descends directly onto the highland pastures. After several more climbs and descents, we arrive at today’s campsite in Kayan, where clumps of grass dry on rooftops and prayer flags flutter in the wind. The path then follows the riverbank, offering views of unique and colorful chortens, Buddhist temples, and the distinctive landscapes for which Nar and Phu are truly renowned.

The hike continues through picturesque canyons and gorges, where the monolithic "Leaning Tower of Pisa" guards the steep ascent to Phu Gate. From this pass, known as Phupigyal Kwe, we catch our first glimpse of Phu’s three villages, along with the ruins of the old dzong (fortress) and two other fortresses—all now decaying, yet strikingly positioned on the plain before Phu.

It is an extra day at Phu. We can go explore around. A unique culture has been preserved here in Nar Phu Valley, where people still make a living in traditional ways. Interact with locals and explore the vast valleys that stretch above. Engage with the villagers as they dedicate their day to spinning yak and sheep wool, engaging in conversation, grinding mustard seeds into a paste and oil, and participating in the various activities that characterize daily life in a Tibetan village.

For photographers, the light here is fantastic, and the skies are a deep blue. You might even spot a few blue sheep in the nearby hills. It is also famous for its centuries-old monasteries and forts. As you wander through the villages, you might be invited into someone's home for an authentic Tibetan salted butter tea or maybe a cup of local "rakshi," pronounced Roxy

For more adventure, alternatively, we can hike to Himlung Base Camp, which lies at an altitude of 4900 meters (16070 ft)

hidden medieval Tibetan-influenced villages, ancient monasteries, and across challenging high-altitude passes. We explore the Cave Gompa and other monuments. In the small town of Manang, we also get to savor authentic Thakali cuisine. Overnight stay at a lodge in Manang.

After climbing several rocky ridges, we make our way toward Ledar or Yak Kharka. The trail leads us through stunning forests of rhododendron, juniper, and pine, where we may spot yaks grazing in the meadows. Along the route, we’ll pass monasteries and Mani walls adorned with vibrant prayer flags, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Himalayas.

Following about four hours of trekking, we arrive at Ledar or Yak Kharka, where we’ll spend the 10th night of the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Nar Phu Valley at a local lodge.

After a two-hour ascent through alpine terrain, we reach Churi Ledar (4,200 m), a small settlement with a few teahouses where trekkers often pause for tea or rest. From here, the trail narrows as we carefully need to cross a landslide-prone section. Be careful and follow the guide's instructions to avoid any injuries.

Then, the Annapurna Circuit trail continues with a steady climb before descending to cross a river. A final uphill stretch then brings us to Thorong Phedi (4,525 m), the base camp for the Thorong La Pass, where several guesthouses provide shelter and food for the night.

Today’s trek begins long before sunrise—we set out at 4 am to reach Thorong La Pass by 9 or 10 am. This early start is essential, as strong winds later in the day can make the journey hazardous. The route is steep but well-defined and easy to follow. The days are most adventurous and thrilling in our Annapurna Circuit Trekking via Nar Phu.

After about four hours of climbing, we arrive at the pass, marked by chortens and fluttering prayer flags. From the summit, we’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. Another four hours of descent brings us to the sacred town of Muktinath.

Muktinath translates to “Lord of Nirvana” and is home to the revered Muktinath Temple, along with several monasteries. It is believed that visiting the temple relieves all sorrows. A deeply holy site for both Hindus and Buddhists, Muktinath draws pilgrims—especially during the peak month of September.

The temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, features 108 water spouts encircling it. Nearby, the Jwala Mai Temple boasts a stunning natural spring and an eternal flame fueled by natural gas.

After breakfast, drive to Jomsom and take a scenic mountain flight to Pokhara. Upon landing at Pokhara, transfer to the hotel and check in. If you have aching calves from the big mountain hike, of the Nar Phu to Annapurna Circuit hike, you have a rest. Or you can go exploring around Lakeside. stroll around the local market and enjoy an evening walk around Phewa Lake.

Overnight in Hotel Mount View.

After an early breakfast. An escort to the tourist bus station by your guide and take a tourist bus to Kathmandu, a scenic drive through Prithvi Highway and the bank of Trishuli River that will take approximately 7 hours. Transfer to your selected hotel in Kathmandu.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Nar Phu Valley - 15 Days FAQs

Annapurna Circuit Trek via Nar Phu Valley Trekking is considered moderately challenging. The trek features remote and rugged terrain, steep ascents and descents, and long walking days (typically 5–7 hours). The high elevation, particularly crossing the 5320m Kang La Pass and the 5426m high Thorong La Pass, requires good physical fitness and stamina, with tolerance crucial.

Yes! While the Nar Phu Valley is located in a restricted area of the Annapurna region, solo trekking is now permitted in such zones. However, under state law, hiring a licensed guide through a registered local trekking agency is mandatory.

Yes, but it is very rushed and really challenging. Combining the Nar Phu Valley with the Thorong La Pass in Annapurna Circuit Trek requires hiking the rugged Nar Phu Circuit, crossing the Kang La Pass, and immediately joining the Annapurna Circuit to conquer Thorong La. A safe and comfortable trip normally takes 15 to 18 days for moderate trekkers. A proper acclimatization is always recommended.

The best time to trek the Annapurna Circuit via the Nar Phu Valley is just after the monsoon, from late September to early October. During this period, you’ll enjoy clear skies, lush greenery, and excellent visibility—ideal conditions for trekking and crossing high passes like Kang La and Thorong La, which are typically free of snow. Spring (March to May) is also a great option, as the trail comes alive with blooming rhododendrons, while autumn offers crisp air and spectacular mountain views. Trekking during the monsoon (June to August) can be quiet and peaceful, but the trail is often wet, and heavy rainfall may cause blockages. Winter (December to February) brings extreme cold and snow-covered passes, making the trek challenging and potentially dangerous.

The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit and Nar Phu Valley Trek is Thorong La Pass, which lies at 5,416 meters (17,800 ft). On Day 9, you cross Kang La Pass (5,322 meters), a high-altitude pass that offers dramatic views of the Annapurna range as you descend onto the main circuit trail. Thorong La Pass, crossed on Day 14, is the trek’s absolute highest point and one of the most iconic passes in the Himalayas. It connects the Manang Valley to Mustang along the first part of the Annapurna Circuit.

Although you can employ a porter to carry your main backpack, a registered guide is still compulsory by the state law for restricted areas like Nar Phu Valley. Wilderness Excursion can help you arranging a Guide cum Porter - assistant who performs dual roles: carrying a portion of your luggage and leading you along the trail. This option bridges the gap between hiring a dedicated professional guide and a separate porter that also saves trip expense.

No, you don’t need to obtain your own permit for the Nar Phu Valley Trek. As a restricted area, permits are only available through a registered trekking agency. Wilderness Excursion takes care of all necessary permits on your behalf—including the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)—making the entire process hassle-free for you.

The amount you pay for the Annapurna Circuit Trek via Nar Phu Valley typically include all necessary permits (RAP and Conservation ticket), registered guide and porter services, public bus transportation (such as drive from Kathmandu to Jagat and return from Pokhara to Kathmandu by tourist bus), teahouse accommodation, three main course of meal a day, and logistics management. However, personal expenses and additional services, such as table drinks, hot showers, Wi-Fi, charging, snacks, drinks, gear rental, tips, and travel insurance are not included in the package.

You are advised to carry around NPR 2,500 per day (approximately USD 20–25) for personal expenses like drinks, snacks, internet access, hot showers, and device charging. Foreign currencies and cards are not accepted along the trekking route, and exchange rates in remote areas are unfavorable. Therefore, it is best to exchange your money in Kathmandu before setting out.
